Three forces now shape the outlook. First, technical barriers: OEM authentication chips and firmware updates can flag or disable third-party cartridges, and control over chip design and technical information affects whether an empty can be collected and reused at all. Second, patent enforcement: European courts continue to act against infringers, which is precisely why the legal distinction matters. There is a clear line between legitimate, patent-respecting compatible and remanufactured cartridges and the illegal, single-use “clone” newbuilds that ETIRA warns are often sold below production cost and expose buyers to poor quality, hazardous plastics and patent litigation. Third, sustainability rules: the EU’s Right to Repair Directive and the Ecodesign framework push the whole market toward reuse, repairability and interoperability.
The likely direction is consolidation around quality and compliance.
