Remanufactured cartridges and the circular economy: WEEE, Blue Angel and ETIRA

← All news

How WEEE, the Blue Angel eco-label and ETIRA support standards-based remanufacturing of cartridges, and how it differs from illegal clones.

Remanufacturing is a standard example of the circular economy. As ETIRA describes it, a remanufactured cartridge is a spent original OEM cartridge that is professionally collected, cleaned, refilled and restored to meet or exceed original performance. Materials stay in use and out of landfill.

The practice fits the EU’s regulatory framework. Reputable remanufacturers work to the WEEE Directive on electronic waste, the REACH chemical-safety regulation and CE marking. Reuse before recycling is the order of priority Europe’s circular-economy policy rewards.

The standards

Germany’s Blue Angel eco-label (DE-UZ 177) sets independently audited criteria for remanufactured toner and ink cartridges. It covers materials, toner quality, particle emissions during printing and serviceability.

The page-yield standards ISO/IEC 19752 (mono toner), 19798 (colour toner) and 24711 (inkjet) let buyers compare like with like. Consumables tested to them give offices a choice that can be verified.

ETIRA consistently separates patent-respecting compatible and remanufactured cartridges from clones that infringe patents. Clones are newly built, often non-compliant units that fail documentation checks and are stopped at the border.

Ergonet supplies compatible and remanufactured toner, ink, drums and parts, and is an authorised reseller with authorised service for major OEM brands. We recommend the right consumable, OEM or compatible, for each printer and each budget.
