Four things decide a compatible cartridge: the exact model and chip match, the declared page yield, colour consistency and the supplier behind it.
The right match
The most common reason a compatible cartridge disappoints is the wrong match. A printer model number is not enough, because the same machine may take different cartridge revisions by region or production batch. Newer cartridges also carry a chip that the printer reads to identify them and report levels.
A well-made compatible or remanufactured cartridge is built to the correct specification with a compatible chip, so the printer recognises it normally. Before you buy, confirm the exact printer model and the OEM cartridge reference, and check that the compatible is listed for that reference. If a firmware update changes how the printer reads cartridges, a specialist supplier tells you which revision you need.
Yield and colour
Quality is judged on numbers you can compare. Serious manufacturers declare page yield using the same ISO/IEC methods the OEMs use: ISO/IEC 19752 for monochrome toner, ISO/IEC 19798 for colour toner and ISO/IEC 24711 for inkjet. That way the real cost per page can be calculated accurately.
For colour work, consistency matters too. A good compatible holds colour steady from the first page to the last and matches the rest of the set, so reprints and long documents stay uniform. It is worth asking about.
The supplier
Lawful compatible and remanufactured cartridges respect existing patents and are legal to sell and use, unlike the counterfeits seized at EU borders. Using them does not in itself void your statutory rights.
